Important Dates

Summer Taxes

  • Summer taxes become a lien on the property on July 1st. Tax bills should be received around this date.
  • Summer Taxes are due on September 14th, unless the 14th falls on a weekend or a holiday, then the due date will be the next business day.
  • If taxes are received after September 14th, 1% is added to the bill for the remainder of September and then 1% per month thereafter.

Winter Taxes

  • Winter taxes become a lien on the property on December 1st. Tax bills should be received around this date.
  • If taxes are to be paid in the same year they will need to be received by the last Township business day in December.
  • Winter taxes are due by February 14th, unless the 14th falls on a weekend or a holiday, then the due date will be the next business day. Taxes are paid at the Township until the last day of February, unless the last day of February falls on a weekend or a holiday, then the last day to pay taxes at the Township will be the next business day. Taxes paid after February 14th may incur an additional penalty from the Township.

Third Party Vendor Payments

Tax bills paid through your online banking system may take 15 to 20 business days to be received by the Township since they are processed by a third-party vendor.  If an escrow company has requested your tax bill it will be indicated on your tax bill after the phrase, “This escrow company requested your bill:”.  Please be aware that your mortgage company most likely uses a separate escrow company to pay the taxes.  

All requests for tax bills should be emailed to: deputytreasurer@howelltownshipmi.org.  There is no fee for requests.

Methods

  • ONLINE: Tax Payments can be made through BS&A Online. Tax bills paid through your online banking system may take 15 to 20 business days to be received by the Township since they are processed by a third-party vendor.  If an escrow company has requested your tax bill it will be indicated on your tax bill after the phrase, “This escrow company requested your bill:”.  Please be aware that your mortgage company most likely uses a separate escrow company to pay the taxes.  
  • CASH: The office keeps minimal cash on hand for security reasons. Please pay with small denomination bills or with the exact change.
  • CHECKS: Please make checks payable to: Howell Township Treasurer. Include your telephone number and property ID number (i.e. 4706-xx-xxx-xxx) on your check. Please write checks for the exact amount of taxes due; do not round up to next dollar amount. Please use black or blue ink.
  • DROP BOX: The Township has a drop box located at the front of the Township Hall by the main entrance for your convenience.  Do not leave cash in the drop box.  Any payments left after 5:00 p.m. will be applied on the next Township business day. 

Policies

  • POSTMARKS: Howell Township does not currently accept
  • PROCESSING FEES: Please be aware fees apply to all online payments that go to the processing company.  Howell Township does not accept E-CHECK payments through our website.
  • PARTIAL PAYMENTS: The Treasurer accepts partial payments for taxes.
  • RECEIPTS: Receipts are given upon request. If you would like a receipt emailed to you, please include your email address on your tax stub.
  • MORTGAGE CODES: Howell Township does accept Excel spreadsheets converted into a notepad for mortgage code imports and for tax payments, as an import.  The spreadsheet needs to include the following information: Parcel Number, Amount Due and Mortgage Code
  • SPECIAL ASSESSMENTS: Sewer and Water are placed on the Winter Tax Bill.
  • DUPLICATE FEES: There is a duplicate tax bill fee of $1.00.  Fee needs to be paid with a separate check.

Missed or Late Bills

Failure to receive a tax bill does not waive interest, penalties, or administration fees.

The legal responsibility of paying taxes on the correct parcel of property rests with the taxpayer.  The Treasurer is not responsible for payments made to the wrong parcel, so it is important that you include your property identification and phone numbers with all payments.
